It’s disputed as to exactly when Jeffrey Dahmer turned to alcohol to smother his violent sexual fantasies and to cope with the world around him.  Classmate Chip Crofoot recalled to the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he saw Dahmer taking sips of liquor from his locker as early as the seventh grade: “I think as far back as the seventh grade, he always had a little bottle of gin.”  In his book My Friend Dahmer, John Backderf writes that the first time Dahmer’s drinking became apparent was in their junior year of high school.  Then, it was typical for Dahmer to come in school drunk and reeking of booze at eight o clock in the morning.
Dahmer devised various ploys to conceal his drinking from teachers.  He often transported his liquor into school with a briefcase.  He hid beer inside the lining of an army jacket that he was rarely seen without wearing.  Dahmer also had the audacity to carry alcohol through the hallways and in the classroom in a styrofoam cup, which faculty mistook for coffee.  Friend Martha Schmidt remembered sitting behind Dahmer in class one morning and seeing him with the cup filled with a dark liquid she recognized clearly as scotch.  When she pressed him about it, Dahmer merely shook his head and said, “It’s my medicine.”
Dahmer’s drinking grew worse towards his senior year.  By this time, Dahmer was not only known as a freak who would perform bizarre stunts for attention, but also as a burgeoning alcoholic whose behavior was erratic and unpredictable—a ticking time bomb, it seemed—and this made classmates very wary of him.  Even the jocks who used to pick on him stopped because they were afraid of him.  Backderf states in his book that at this point, Dahmer was drunk every day at school and that he often skipped classes altogether to hide in the woods outside the building and drink.  Dahmer’s drinking only became heavier throughout his life.  Still, he maintained in his confession that he did not actually consider himself to be an alcoholic, and that his abuse of alcohol was always auxiliary to his perverse desires and activities.

Richard Ramirez was on suicide watch in the days after his August 30, 1985 arrest and a sheriff deputy who was watching him said he saw Ramirez drawing symbols of devil worship in his own blood on the floor of his cell on September 2, 1985.“I looked through the doorway and saw the defendant sitting on the toilet,” said Deputy Gerald Newbold. “He was bleeding from the palm.” He said he watched Ramirez dip his left hand into the blood on his right palm and write on the floor the numbers “666” and draw a pentagram.
